Professor Patrick Hitchon received the Zucha Medal for Meritorious Service to Slovakian Neurosurgery at the 3rd Congress of Slovakian Neurosurgeons in Tatras Lesna, Slovakia. Professor Hitchon previously received an Honorary Doctorate from the Societas Medica Slovaca for his contributions to neurosurgical education in Slovakia.

Greg Foltz has accepted a neurosurgical faculty position as Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Iowa. He joins a distinguished faculty including Patrick Hitchon, Arnold Menezes, John VanGilder, Matthew Howard, Vincent Traneylis, Timothy Ryken and Hiroto Kawasaki. The corporate office of the Neurosurgery International Foundation will also transfer to Iowa City, Iowa. We look forward to establishing our physician exchange and internet consultation programs at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, the largest university-owned teaching hospital in the United States.
What's New - September 7, 2002
A delegation of NSI members from the US and UK attended the 3rd Russian Congress of Neurosurgery in St. Petersburg, Russia, June 4-8. Greg Foltz, Ali Mesiwala, Dave Lundin, Saadi Ghatan, Adam Lipson, Richard Hatfield and Henry Marsh
gave presentations in a special section devoted to pediatric neurosurgery. Ramiro Lima from Montevidea, Uruguay and Sanhu Zhao from Shanghai, China visited Seattle for six weeks as part of the physician exchange program. Rovshan Khalil-zadeh is currently visiting Atkinson Morley's Hospital in Wimbledon.

Dr. Greg Foltz presented a paper entitled "Internet-Based Consultations in International Neurosurgery Education:
Initial Experience with 200 Cases," at the 70th Annual Meeting of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS). The paper
was selected for a press release and
will be featured in the Summer 2002 "Innovations in Technology" issue of the AANS Bulletin.
Special Announcements - December 20, 2001
Neurosurgery International supports the efforts of our Russian colleagues,
Professors B.V. Gaidar and V.B. Semenyutin, in establishing an online
neurosurgery journal, Russian
Neurosurgery, published in both Russian and English. We encourage
neurosurgeons from the US and UK to contribute articles of interest
in support of this important endeavor.
The 3rd
Russian Congress of Neurosurgery will take place in Saint Petersburg
June 4-8, 2002 at the Russian Medical Military Academy. This promises
to be an excellent educational meeting and an exciting opportunity
to exchange ideas with our Russian colleagues during the "White
Nights" of St. Petersburg.
What's New - December 2001
Richard Hatfield, Greg Foltz, and Henry Marsh completed a successful fact-finding
visit to St. Petersburg which included presentations at the Medical Academy of Postgraduate Studies
and visits to several area Children's Hospitals. We plan to continue working with our Russian colleagues,
Professors Iova and Garmashov, in establishing a Seattle-St. Petersburg Children's Fund to support improved
treatments for hydrocephalus and pediatric brain tumors. Plans are for a
return visit in June 2002 to coincide with the 3rd Russian Congress of Neurosurgery.

Richard Hatfield, Greg Foltz, Roman Zoltowski, and Henry Marsh
delivered an operating microscope donated by the British Government
to our neurosurgical colleagues in Lviv, Ukraine. Pictures will
be posted soon on the international medical missions webpage.
A fact-finding visit to St. Petersburg is scheduled for late October
2001. Henry Marsh, Richard Hatfield and Greg Foltz will meet with
Dr. Dmitry Volokhotyuk and his pediatric neurosurgery colleagues
to discuss future collaborations with Neurosurgery International.
We now have fully functional Russian, Chinese and Ukrainian versions
of our website (thanks to Misha Gelfenbeyn, Andrij Myzak and Fang Chen).
The Doctor to Doctor online consultation forum has received its
first cases from Albania, Bosnia, India and China. We welcome Drs.
Fatos Olldashi, Kemal Dizdarevic, M. Balamurugan, Vincent Thamburaj,
and Ming Song and their colleagues to our growing online community
of international neurosurgeons. Our first international consultation
from the Ukraine was posted on 2/3/01.
Greg Foltz will serve on the Joint International Committee of the
Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the American Association of
Neurological Surgeons at their annual meetings in October 2001 and
April 2002.
